Lors de leur dernier passage à Montréal, Nick a eu l’occasion de discuter avec Andreas du groupe The Rabid Whole, voici ce qu’il avait à nous dire. (Version anglaise au bas de l’article)
DR – Comment vas-tu? Bienvenu à Montréal !
Andreas: Je vais bien merci.
DR – Est-ce ta première visite à Montréal ?
Andreas: Non, je suis venu ici tellement de fois. Je ne peux même plus m’en souvenir. Peut-être cinq fois.
DR – Peux-tu me raconter les origines du groupe ?
Andreas: La première mouture de The Rabid Whole a pris forme dans une petite ville appelée Regina… J’écrivais un peu de musique et voulais réunir un groupe pour jouer tout ça en live. George a été le premier à me rejoindre et le seul à y être resté coincé jusqu’à maintenant. On a sorti ‘Autraumaton’ en 2009 sur un label de Vancouver, Synthetic Sounds. On a tourné à travers le Canada avec des groupes incroyables. Ensuite, on a sorti un album remix avec certains de nos artistes favoris.
Finalement, j’ai quitté mon job (j’étais ingénieur pour une compagnie de consulting) et j’ai bougé sur Toronto pour donner toutes ses chances au groupe. On a perdu deux membres dans l’histoire, mais j’en ai récupéré trois super bon peu après !
DR – Vous avez donc bougé de Saskatoon à Toronto, pourquoi ?
Andreas: Regina en fait… 😛 on était localisé plutôt loin de l’industrie musicale. C’était nager à contre-courant en quelque sorte. Rien que le fait de poser une affiche du groupe à une intersection importante de Toronto valait plus la peine que de rester à Regina. C’est la décision la plus intelligente qu’on ait prise.
DR – Parle-moi du dernier album, ‘Refuge’.
Andreas: J’ai travaillé dans notre studio personnel, TRWHQ, ici à Toronto de mon réveil au soir pendant deux mois non-stop. J’ai peut-être quitté cette pièce trois fois pendant toute cette période. Lorsque le processus a été finalisé à 75%, je suis allé chez Karl Schubach (Misery Signals, Solace) pendant trois semaines pour réenregistrer les morceaux et me transformer en producteur comme il l’avait été sur notre premier album. Quelques jours plus tard, je me suis envolé pour Vancouver pour rencontrer le légendaire Dave ‘Rave’ Ogilvie pour faire le mixage. Ensuite, retour à Toronto pour le mastering avec Noah Mintz.
Pendant cette période, je suis passé par beaucoup de changements dans ma vie personnelle et ‘Refuge est une réflexion à propos de tout ça. Il parle de changement et des émotions et des expériences par lesquelles passe un individu et de la recherche de la paix de l’esprit au final.
DR – Qui sont tes influences, les artistes qui t’inspirent ?
Andreas: NIN, Filter, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Aphex Twin, U-ZIQ, Bjork, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, The Birthday Massacre, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, The Police, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Deftones, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Tool, Ohgr, etc… des groupes avec des personnalités uniques.
DR – Quel est le futur à moyen terme pour Rabid Whole ?
Andreas: On se prépare à sortir une nouvelle vidéo de notre chanson ‘Stargazer’ faite par le réalisateur Peter Arvidsson d’Electrik Playground. Je suis aussi retourné en studio pour travailler sur de nouvelles choses pour une sortie début 2014. On se prépare aussi pour une tournée US/Canada en automne avec BILE alors restez connectés !
DR – Ton plus grand rêve ?
Andreas: Une tournée mondiale bien sûr… ça ne semble pas aussi délirant qu’il y a quelques années ;o) Hmmm arriver à des succès personnels en gardant le respect de nos fans. J’aime à penser que j’ai mérité quelque chose.

DR – Welcome in Montréal?
Andreas: Hi! I’m doing great, Thanks.
DR – It Is your first visit in Montréal?
Andreas: No, I’ve visited Montreal so many times I can’t even remember…performing maybe 5 times.
DR – Can you speak of the origins of the Group?
Andreas: The first incarnation of The Rabid Whole came together in a small city called Regina….I had been writing some music and wanted to put together a band to perform it live. George was the first member on board and only one other than me who’s stuck it out ’til now. We put out our debut album ‘Autraumaton’ in 2009 through a Vancouver based label ‘Synthetic Sounds’. We did some touring through Canada and got to play and with with some amazing bands. We then released a remix version of this album featuring some of our fav artists.
Eventually, we quit our day jobs ( I was an engineer for a consulting company) and moved the band to Toronto to really push things. We lost two members in the process but gained three amazing ones soon after!
DR – You leave Saskatoon to establish in Toronto I think? Why the change?
Andreas: Regina actually… 😛 We left because we were in a location far from industry, our demographic, everything. It was like swimming against the current. Even things as simple as the impact of putting up a poster in a major intersection of Toronto Vs putting one up in Regina… I feel the move to Toronto was one of the smartest things we’ve ever done.
DR – Talk me about your latest album « refuge »
Andreas: I worked at our personal studio ‘TRWHQ’ here in Toronto for about 2 months non-stop from the moment I woke up until the moment I fell asleep…the times I actually got to sleep… I may have left the place 3 times in that entire period… Once the writing process was 75% done I flew over Karl Schubach (Misery Signals, Solace) for about 3 weeks to re-record the songs and act as producer again as he did on our first album… Days later I flew over to Vancouver to meet up with the legendary Dave ‘Rave’ Ogilvie to handle the mixing, and then back to Toronto for Noah Mintz to master the album.
The couple of years leading up to this album I was going through a lot of personal changes in my life and Refuge is basically a direct reflection of all this. ‘Refuge’ is about change and all the emotions and experiences that an individual will pass through in the process and ultimately the search for personal peace of mind at the end of it all.
DR – What are your influences, the artists will inspire you?
Andreas: NIN, Filter, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Aphex Twin, U-ZIQ, Bjork, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, The Birthday Massacre, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, The Police, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Deftones, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Tool, Ohgr, etc… bands with unique personalities.
DR – What is medium-term future for the Rabid Whole?
Andreas: Well, we’re getting ready to release a new video which we shot with director Peter Arvidsson from Elekrik Playground for our track ‘Stargazer’, I’ve been back in the studio every day working on new music for release in early 2014, we’re getting ready to tour the US/Can again in the fall with BILE so be sure to CHECK US OUT!!
DR – Your biggest dream, or Your wildest dream?
Andreas: Touring the world of course…doesn’t seem as wild as it did a few years ago though… 🙂 Hmm… achieving personal success while still maintaining respect from our fans/peers…. I always like to feel like I earned something.
